Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS): Key to Factory Digital Transformation
7:02

In manufacturing today, the pressure to optimize operations, reduce costs, and maintain sustainability has never been greater. While many facilities still rely on traditional paper-based systems for tracking and managing their operations, this approach is becoming increasingly outdated and inefficient.

The integration of Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) with modern display technologies offers a transformative solution that's reshaping the future of manufacturing. Let's explore how this innovative approach is optimizing factory operations and why it's becoming a crucial element in the industry's digital transformation journey.

Disadvantages of paper-based operations in the factory and intralogistics

The use of paper-based processes in factories and intralogistics has a number of disadvantages that can affect efficiency and transparency. One major aspect is the susceptibility to manual errors. Recording data on paper is prone to errors and can lead to inaccurate information, which, in turn, can lead to potential production problems.

Another significant disadvantage is the time and effort involved. The manual processing of paper documents requires additional resources and can lead to longer production times. This has a direct impact on the overall efficiency of operations.

Limited real-time visibility is also an issue with paper-based operations. Paper documents offer limited insight into the current status of materials and processes. This limited visibility makes quick and informed decisions difficult, which is critical in a dynamic production environment.

Traceability of materials and products can be hampered by the use of paper documents. In the event of quality issues or recalls, the manual nature of paper-based processes can hinder the identification and isolation of affected products.

Last but not least, the use of paper leads to high paper consumption. This not only has a negative impact on the environment, but also causes additional costs for the procurement, storage and management of paper. Overall, these disadvantages show that the transition to digital and automated processes in factories and intralogistics can bring decisive advantages.

Integrating RTLS with E-Ink Displays for a Seamless Transition to a Paperless Factory

In this digital era, production facilities are seeing a massive shift from manual operations towards fully automated systems. Electronic shelf labels (ESL) are a prime example of such technological advancements in the manufacturing and production industry. However, combining location intelligence/tracking with ESL displays can bring several new opportunities for understanding and optimizing the flow of material and assets in your facilities. Real-Time Location Systems (RTLS) can take these benefits to the next level.

The RTLS platform combines the location data from RTLS tags with the e-ink display system, creating a comprehensive digital asset. This enables the transition to a paperless factory, eliminating all manual data collection walls and the need for manual updates. The e-ink labels automatically update load/status information based on the real-time location of the bin.

Real-time status updates via e-ink tags include important details such as status, material number, batch number, batch barcode, quantity, SAP material number, number of reuses, powder container, and container type. This wealth of information is continuously updated in real-time and provides a dynamic overview of the production landscape.

Real-time location and status updates on the platform enable platform-based notifications, alerting stakeholders when predefined processes deviate from expected values. Immediate warnings, such as when transferring containers to the wrong zone or indications of manually required interventions, allow for quick response to process deviations, preventing longer delays in production.

Event triggers, including process locks, releases, or notifications for internal transport, can be seamlessly initiated. These triggers, in conjunction with warnings for manual interventions, enable a rapid response to process fluctuations, ensuring minimal interruptions in the production flow.

Through integration with ERP, MES, or PP interfaces, location-based information can be utilized to set process locks or releases. These systems trigger automated workflows that can lead to subsequent processes, such as the locking or releasing of safety zones (so-called quality lock or release) or the initiation of pickup orders.

The path to a paperless factory is solidified by implementing real-time status updates via E-Ink displays. These displays showcase essential production details and provide an immediate and accurate overview of the production environment, emphasizing the commitment to efficiency and transparency.
